Two Conservation Labs, Two Stories: The 1091 Project

The conservation labs at Iowa State University and Duke University have created a new, collaborative blogging projects called the “1091 Project.” Ames, Iowa and Durham, North Carolina are 1,091 miles apart. The two programs share many similarities, but also have their unique aspects as well. Each month they pick a topic and share their perspectives on that topic. This is an exciting new way to collaborate with colleagues from across the country.

“Dogs make the perfect reading companion,” said Becky Schaade, coordinator of library services for the Franklin County District Library. “There’s no judgment; if you stumble over a word, it doesn’t matter. They’re willing to wait for you.”

Therapy dogs are being used in many libraries in central Ohio to give young readers a patient, happy audience when struggling with difficult material.

Empty Bowls at the library

As the Outreach Librarian at a university in Georgia, I get to host a bowl making party to benefit Empty Bowls (http://www.emptybowls.net/) in my library. I started looking for ways to volunteer myself, then realized that I could contribute a lot more bowls by hosting an event in a high-traffic area of the library!

The event is today. They’re bringing 100 lbs. of clay. I’ve never done one of these before, so I don’t have a good idea of how much that is… Except that it is a LOT!

How awesome is that?!
